About

UMEM

The Union Mondiale des Écrivains Médecins (UMEM) is a literary organization that brings doctors writers around the world. It was established in 1956 in Sanremo (Italy), where the first congress took place, under the name Fédération Internationale des Sociétés des Medecins Écrivains (FISEM), only using its current name in 1974 in Lugano (CH) on the occasion of its congress held that year.

When it was FISEM, only few countries (France, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium) owned National Associations of doctors writers. Soon over the years many other Associations were added: Greece, Portugal, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Spain, Ecuador, Hungary, Mozambique, Brazil, Romania, Netherlands, Argentina, Canada.

(from Article 1 of the Statute)

UMEM is an international organization of doctors writers based on friendship and collegiality, extended to the entire world and including doctors writers of all nations.

Its objectives are the development of a supranational thought, tolerance, exchanges and the promotion, in all sectors, of culture, mutual respect and understanding, as well as the spirit of humanity among all human beings, regardless of their race, religious confession and political opinion.

The UMEM aims to allow its members establishing ties of friendship and understanding among writers doctors of different nationalities, promoting their literary activity and helping to disseminate their work.
