About
UMEM
The Union Mondiale des Écrivains Médecins (UMEM) is a literary organization that brings doctors writers around the world. It was established in 1956 in Sanremo (Italy), where the first congress took place, under the name Fédération Internationale des Sociétés des Medecins Écrivains (FISEM), only using its current name in 1974 in Lugano (CH) on the occasion of its congress held that year.
When it was FISEM, only few countries (France, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium) owned National Associations of doctors writers. Soon over the years many other Associations were added: Greece, Portugal, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Spain, Ecuador, Hungary, Mozambique, Brazil, Romania, Netherlands, Argentina, Canada.
(from Article 1 of the Statute)
